Generation 5 - Bill Potts
William (Bill) Leonard Potts is a fifth generation descendent of Frank Potts.
After schooling at the Langhorne Creek Primary school and Strathalbyn High School,
Bill studied at the renowned Roseworthy Agricultural College for two years.
In 1974 he returned home to the family vineyard, purchased by the Potts family in 1900. Here he worked along side his father Lenny, and Uncle Kevin. The vineyard had grown to 90 acres by 1983 when Kevin split it into two equal holdings of 45 acres. Lenny made the decision to give Bill some responsibility and handed over his interest in the 45 acres of vineyard.
At this time the industry was in the state of change, traditional techniques were being challenged and new techniques were being innovated. Trickle irrigation was installed, old varieties like grenache, chenin blanc and frontignac were removed and replanted to new varieties such as chardonnay and merlot. Cultivation practices were challenged and new ones adopted. The vineyard began to evolve, and this evolution has continued at pace over the ensuing years.
Bill has always challenged the traditional boundaries for growing grapes in Langhorne Creek. His implementation of new and innovative viticultural practices ensures he can realise his ambition of producing the best quality fruit in Langhorne Creek.
